Size guide

Curtain size guide - measurements and dimensions

How to choose the right dimensions?

To choose the size of your curtains, measure the width of your rod excluding the ends, then the height between the rod and the floor.
In general, we plan for curtains 1.5 to 2 times wider than the window and one that falls flush to the ground or is slightly brittle.

All that remains is to choose from our standard Madura dimensions.

How to choose the size of your curtains?

1. Width: Measure the rod and add ~20cm to each side. Take curtains 1.5 to 2x wider for a nice pleat.

2. Height: place the rod 10–15 cm above the window, measure to the ground then choose between hanging clean (flush with the ground) or brittle (a few cm more).

3. Madura sizes: our curtains exist in standard height available in several widths, and in large height for rooms with higher ceilings.

Madura standard curtain sizes. Easy as pie.

We design 4 sizes of curtains:
1 standard height available in 3 widths, and 1 high height in standard width.

The standard for ceiling height varies between 2.50 meters (recent housing) and 2.80 meters for older housing, with a few exceptions (noble floor of Haussmannian buildings or loft). It's impossible not to find the right size of curtains: the height of our curtains being adjustable, it is likely that you will find the width adapted to your window within our standard height collection (280cm).

How to take your measurements

For optimal results, the rod must be placed between 10 cm and 15 cm above the window and protrude 20 cm from each side of the supports.

To find out how to measure curtains start with:

Step 1 : measure the rod width.

Step 2 : measure the height of rod to floor.

Step 3 : choose a fall: low to the ground / brittle / short.

Measure the width of your rod

Measuring the ideal height for your curtains

What is the American height size?

The American height size corresponds to a curtain length shorter than the European standard height. It generally reaches just above the ground, or even at window sill level, and is often used for a practical and modern look.

This type of curtain size is well suited to rooms where you want to prevent the fabric from touching the floor: kitchen, office or child's bedroom. It also facilitates maintenance and limits clutter near furniture or radiators.
To choose wisely, it is important to correctly measure the curtains from the rod to the desired height.

The curtain height 200 cm: for which windows and in which rooms?

A 200 cm height curtain is ideal for standard windows or small patio doors. This length is often chosen when the ceiling height is moderate or when the rod is installed quite low.

This format is suitable for example for classic bedroom windows, a short bedroom curtain for a practical style and openings located above a radiator or piece of furniture.

For a harmonious result, remember to also adapt the width of the curtains: we generally recommend 1.5 to 2 times the width of the window in order to obtain pretty folds.

Sheer height 220 cm: in what cases should it be used?

The 220 cm height sheer is an excellent compromise between elegance and lightness. It lets light through while protecting from view, making it a frequent choice for the living room or dining room.

It is mainly used:

- in living rooms with standard height
- to dress a French window
- when you want a slightly falling length of living room curtains but without excess

This type of sheer can be easily combined with different types of more blackout curtains to modulate the light according to the time of day.

What size curtain to choose for a bay window?

Choosing the right size for a bay window is essential to maintain an aesthetic and practical appearance. It is necessary to take into account both the curtain width, the installation height and the type of opening (sliding or leaf).

As a general rule:

- the total width of the fabric must be greater than the width of the bay window
- the height depends on the height of the curtain rod and the desired effect (breaking or flush with the ground)
- a good choice improves visual and thermal insulation

3 m bay window curtain: what width and height to choose?

For a bay window curtain 3m, plan for a total width of fabric 1.5 to 2 times higher to the width of the bay.

This allows for regular folds and an elegant drape, even when the curtains are closed.

Example: 300 cm bay window → recommended total fabric width: 450 to 600 cm distributed over several panels.

For height, measure from the top of the rod to the floor to determine the measure curtains ideal. This method remains the best to know how to choose your curtains without error.

Curtain for sliding bay window: what width and length to plan for?

A curtain for sliding bay window must be wide enough not to obstruct the opening and offer nice movement.

We generally recommend:

- a total width 1.5 to 2 times the bay window

- a length reaching ground level or slightly brittle for a more elegant style

The curtain is particularly suitable for large glass surfaces because it provides softness while maintaining brightness. To choose it well, consider combining it with thicker curtains if you need blackout.

The Salon

For the living room, the objective is to create an elegant effect and highlight the ceiling height.

Measurement and recommended length:

Place the rod approximately 10 to 15 cm above the window.

Measure the height from the rod to the floor.

Choose one that falls at ground level (–1 cm) or slightly brittle (+3 to 5 cm).

Madura decorating advice:
For an elegant look, choose curtains that skim the floor or break slightly.

The Room

In the bedroom, the goal is to create an intimate and cozy atmosphere while promoting concealment.

Measurement and recommended length:

Use the same principle as for the living room: rod placed 10 to 15 cm above the window.

Measure down to the floor.

Prefer to hang at ground level to facilitate maintenance.

Madura decorating advice:
We generally avoid curtains that are too short in bedrooms, unless there is a particular constraint.

The ideal length remains flush with the ground.

The Kitchen

Here, the objective is above all practical: to avoid splashes and not to obstruct the work surface or the sink.

Measurement and recommended length:

Measure from the rod to the desired stopping point (windowsill, above the radiator or worktop).

Remove about 1-2 cm to prevent the curtain from touching.

Decorating tip:
In the kitchen, choose short curtains or sheers that stop above the window sill to remain practical on a daily basis.

How do you want it to look?

While the choice of curtain size (width and height) depends on the size and positioning of the rod, it's also important to consider the desired effect.

The fall

To adjust the height of your curtains: use the iron-on strip provided with each curtain section and consult our guide to learning how to hem or call on our service home retouching.

Clean rendering

For a clean finish, look for a flush finish 1 cm above the ground.

Brittle rendering

For a brittle finish, allow an extra 3 to 5 cm.

Gathering

The greater the width of the curtain, the more pleated it will be if you're using a pleated head, or wavy if you're using an eyelet head.

Curtains

Light gathering

For a lightly gathered effect, choose a curtain width equivalent to 1.5 times the width of your rod.

Pronounced gathering

For a pronounced gathered effect, opt for a curtain width equivalent to 2 times the width of your rod.

Sheer curtains

Light gathering

For a lightly gathered effect, choose a sheer width equivalent to 1.5 times the width of your rod.

Pronounced gathering

For a pronounced gathered effect, opt for a width of sheer equivalent to 2.5 times the width of your rod
