How much darkness do you actually get with a blackout curtain?
A blackout curtain blocks almost all light, but the degree of darkness varies depending on the product. A technical guide specifies that a room darkening curtain or a light blackout curtain blocks approximately 75-85% light, while a dark blackout curtain reaches 90-100% and that a “total blackout” curtain eliminates 100% light whatever its color. For a perfect night without shutters, opt for a 100% blackout model; for partial darkness or a gentle awakening, a blackout curtain is sufficient.
Do the materials (linen, cotton, velvet) influence the level of concealment?
Yes. The velvet, a noble and thick material, combines high blackout power and sound and thermal insulation; it is ideal for an elegant bedroom or living room.
The cotton is natural and breathable, but generally requires blackout lining to completely block light.
The linen is appreciated for its natural appearance but remains decorative; combined with a lining, it becomes a good ally for living rooms. Finally, technical fabrics mixing polyester, acrylic and cotton can benefit from treatments which reinforce concealment and insulation.. The thickness and density of the fabric therefore play a key role: the heavier and tighter a curtain is, the more light it blocks.
What should I do if the blackout curtain is not perfectly opaque in my room?
Several solutions can improve opacity. First, check the dimensions: the width of the curtain should be 1.5 to 2.5 times that of the window and cover at least 20 cm on each side to avoid light leaks; in height, it must exceed the window and, if possible, touch the floor. If the light still shines through, you can add a blackout lining which reinforces the blackout effect and improves insulation. Madura recommends attaching the lining behind the curtain using a double support to transform a filtering or decorative curtain into a blackout curtain. Finally, choosing a denser fabric or a darker color will increase the concealment.
Does the color of the blackout curtain influence its ability to block light?
Yes. The light colors (white, ecru, beige) provide softness and luminosity but can allow a little light to filter through; it is therefore advisable to combine them with a lining for optimal concealment. The dark shades (black, gray, brown) accentuate the darkness and create a cozy atmosphere, even without shutters. The pastels (powder pink, peacock blue, sage green) bring serenity and can be effective with a lining. The choice of color therefore depends on your needs for darkness and the brightness of the room: choose strong tones for very sunny rooms and doubled light tones for less bright spaces.
How to optimize thermal insulation with a blackout curtain and a lining?
To maximize insulation, combine a blackout curtain with a thermal lining. A thermal lining limits heat loss in winter and maintains freshness in summer. Sound linings also reduce noise pollution. Madura points out that the lining also protects against cold and heat by blocking drafts and reflecting the sun's rays.. For optimal insulation, choose a thick fabric like velvet and make sure the curtain covers the window in width and height to block drafts. Installation on a double rod allows you to superimpose blackout curtain and lining, thus optimizing thermal efficiency and darkness.
